Before the Flight
Before you depart, see that you have a to-do list. Whether you are taking a personal or a business trip, you must be free of worries over your affairs. Since over-excitement can cause jet lag, take everything easy. As much as possible, avoid drinking too much alcohol hours before your departure. Instead, get some exercise to get fit. Being fit also means you will be less prone to any sickness like flu and cold. If you are sick, you can either make your flight or, worse, delay your trip. Finally, before your flight, make sure that you have slept enough.
What Direction is Favorable?
Choosing the direction of your flight is another precautionary measure you can take to reduce jet lag. Although some based their flight directions—whether east or west—on their personal preference, you should at least know what the experts say about this issue.
What is Your Flight Schedule?
Some travelers prefer night flights while others prefer day flights. Although the reasons are mostly based on personal experiences and preferences, your choice of flight time can be crucial. Why do you think major airlines schedule their long-haul flights during the day? Possibly, daylight long-haul flights are not the jet lag culprits at all.
Avoid Dehydration, Drink Enough Fluids
Scientifically, travelers can suffer from dehydration because of the dry air on an aircraft. However, if your body gets enough fluid during the flight, it can fight dehydration. Instead of drinking tea, fruit juices, and coffee, drink water or sports drinks. If possible, avoid alcoholic drinks especially during the flight. The intoxicating effect of alcohol is greater when you are in the rarefied atmosphere of the plane than when you are on the ground.
Equip Yourself with Sleeping Aids
Sometimes it pays to sleep when traveling, especially if you are not used to flying. To get a good sleep on the plane, use earplugs, blindfolds, inflatable pillows, neck rests, and other sleeping gear. If you know you are prone to jet lag because you cannot sleep during the flight, replace your shoes with soft slippers. This will relieve your feet from fatigue and pressure.
Constantly Exercise and Stretch Your Muscles
Stretching can ease your muscles. Walking back and forth in the aisle is another good activity. Constant movements help eliminate the feeling of discomfort and prevent the formation of blood clots. During stopovers, do yourself a favor and get off the plane and walk around.
Take Showers if You Can
Taking a shower during stopovers can be refreshing. Showers allow your blood to circulate normally and your muscles to loosen up. Pilots know the positive effects of showering, as doing so can help prevent jet lag as well.
The No-Jet-Lag Remedy
You can take medication, such as No-Jet-Lag, to fight jet lag attack. No-Jet-Lag has no side effects when taken in low dosages. Airplane passengers who do not want to ruin their trip because of jet lag resort to No-Jet-Lag tablets. Later, they feel the positive effects that it can bring. No-Jet-Lag tablets are available at international airports, in pharmacies, and in travel stores.
Melatonin has been sensational at reducing jet lag. However, its effectiveness remains under study since there have been claims that it can actually worsen jet lag. This will happen if the time intervals for taking the medication are not regular or if are not followed.
Diet is a Bit Risky
You often do not have the time to diet before traveling. What if your flight is an unexpected occurrence? How will you deal with it? Forcing yourself to diet is not practical and also a bit complicated. However, if you think that you can follow a diet before your flight, do so correctly.
Do Not Settle for Anything Less, Avoid Sleeping Pills
Do not even think about taking sleeping pills to escape the attack of jet lag. Doing so is risky and you do not want to suffer the consequences while traveling. Some travelers can sleep throughout the entire flight. Sleeping pills tend to dehydrate travelers and can create blood circulation troubles. Since these are not positive effects, avoid sleeping pills when traveling.
