US citizens who want to
visit French Polynesia for tourism for less than 30 days are not required to secure a tourist visa. Similarly, those who plan to travel to French Polynesia on a business trip are not required to secure a business visa as well, if their stay is less than 30 days. However, US citizens have to present their passport which should have at least six month validity and a blank visa page. Visitors who wish to extend their stay can do so up to three months by applying with the Border Police at the airport or with the Haut Commissionaire (The French High Commissioner). All applications for extension of stay should be accompanied by a fiscal stamp that can be purchased from a post office.
French Polynesia, made up of several groups of Polynesia Islands in the Southern Pacific Ocean, is considered an overseas country of the Republic of France. As such, immigration matters are administered by France. Visitors who plan to
stay in French Polynesia for more than 30 days are required to secure a visa from the French Embassy at 4101 Reservoir Road NW, Washington, DC 20007 with telephone numbers 202-944-6200, and fax number 202-944-6212.
Aside from visa and passport requirements, US citizens are required to present proof of financial capability to pay for the expenses of their stay in the islands. They should also present round trip airline tickets and are encouraged to carry a copy of their U.S. passports with them at all times, so that proof of identity and U.S. citizenship are readily available for local authorities.
