Airports in Uzbekistan

Tashkent International Airport is the largest airport in Uzbekistan. The country has secondary and smaller airports in Bukhara, Karshi, and Samarkand . The autonomous republic of Nukus has two gateways - Nukus and Zarafshan Airports.

Tashkent International Airport (TIA), the largest airport in Central Asia, is the main entrance to Uzbekistan. Located 12 km from the city center, TIA underwent rebuilding in 2001 to expand its passenger capacity. Today it services an average of two million passengers a year. TIA has separate buildings for domestic and international terminals. Both structures have modern waiting lounges, VIP halls, restaurants and bars. Many other convenience points are inside. Because of a growing tourism industry in the country, TIA is going through extensive renovation again. The rebuilding covers the international arrival hall, duty-free shops, and airport hotels.

Meanwhile, Bukhara Airport handles four major carriers, all flying to Russia: Atlant-Soyuz Airlines, Moscovia Airlines, Transaero Airlines, and Uzbekistan Airways.

Uzbekistan is landlocked with former Soviet Republic in Central Asia. The country shares its border with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan. The economy of the country depends on commodity production of cotton, gold, uranium and natural gas. The total land area of the country is 447,400 square km with a population of 27,727,435 people. The country is double-landlocked as it is surrounded also by other landlocked countries. Only ten percent is arable land while the remaining lands are desert plains and mountain ranges.
