Airports in Iran

The two busiest airports in Iran are Imam Khomeini International Airport and Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran.

Imam Khomeini International Airport serves British Airways, Emirates, Lufthansa, and other domestic airlines. It is about an hour and a half's drive from the city. It has about 88 check-in counters with a chain of Iranian fast food joint and two cafes within the terminal. In 2007, it began to receive all international flights except from Damascus, Jeddah, and Medina.

Meanwhile, Mehrabad International Airport now only serves domestic flights. It is nearer the city center than the Imam Khomeini International Airport. It also serves as a maintenance and training center for Iran's national airline. Its hangar is connected to the Mehrabad Airport via a taxiway across Tehran-karaj Highway.

Formerly known as Persia until 1935, Iran holds a large percentage of the world's oil reserves and gas supply. It is the OPEC's 2nd largest exporter, and the world's 4th largest. The region is home to the longest and oldest continuous major civilizations, some dating back to 7000 BC. It is from this period that the rich history of Iran flourished.

Iran is divided into 30 provinces with Tehran as its capital city. Other major Iranian cities include Mashbad, Ishafan, Tabriz, Karaj and Shiraz.

At the moment, there is talk of a US-funded airport construction in Halabja near the Kurdistan border. This is an effort to ease out issues between ethnic Kurds and Iranians. Politics in Iran is volatile since there is still an on-going debate over what went wrong with the latest presidential election.
