Overview

Virgin America is a low cost airline based in the United States whose main aim is to provide low fare service between cities on the East and West coasts of the United States. Their services were started in 2007. It is headquartered in Burlingame, California and operates about 34 Airbus planes owned or leased by the airlines. The airline has an IATA code of VX, an ICAO code of VRD and its Callsign is Redwood. It is the brainchild of Virgin Branson, a British entrepreneur who has many other airlines with the same brand name, but which do not have any linkages with Virgin America.

Flying Route

Virgin America flies to only nine destinations within the United States. They are Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, and San Francisco in California, Boston, Las Vegas, New York, Washington, D.C. and Seattle. Its focus city is Los Angeles and its hub is in San Francisco. It has an agreement with V Australia that allows Virgin America customers to access long haul routes to Australia.

Check-In

Online check-in is available to customers 24 hours before the flight and up to 90 minutes before flight time. Baggage can also be checked-in online after paying necessary charges if any and dropping the package at the counter before the flight. Passengers have to be at the boarding gate 45 minutes before the flight. Kiosk check-in is also available if you have the credit card that has been used to book the flight. You can also choose your seat from the kiosk. Passengers with a pet have to check-in through the check-in counters, as do unaccompanied minors.

Baggage

Passengers in the main cabin can check-in as many as ten packages at the rate of US$15 per package. The weight restriction is 70 lbs for the first package which is free, and 50 lbs for each of the others. Hand baggage is restricted to 16 lbs and has dimensional restrictions based on the space below the seat. For first class passengers, two packages are free, with weight restrictions of 70 and 50 lbs. Overweight bags are charged US$50 to US$100 per piece. The ability to take a lot of packages has greatly helped the airline to increase its load factor.

Traveling Infants

Infants have to be accompanied by a passenger who is at least 15 years old and would have to provide a proof of age. The infant can be carried free of charge as long as it is on the lap of the passenger and is below the age of two. An infant stroller or child safety seat is allowed free of charge. Children below seven days old have to have a doctor's certificate about the infant's capability to withstand the effects of the journey. A child can occupy an adjacent seat with a suitable restraint device, but would require a ticket to be purchased.

Minors

Unaccompanied minors are only allowed on non stop flights and have to report in at least 90 minutes before the flight time. Adults escorting the minors can receive a gate access pass to accompany the child inside the airport before handing them over to the representatives of the airlines. They are encouraged to stay at the gate until the flight takes off. Persons meeting the child at the destination need to have government provided photo ID that matches the name given on the minor's booking form. The airline has to be informed of any special needs of the child.

Pets

Pets are allowed in the main cabin of all Virgin America flights. They are not allowed in the First Class cabin. Pets have to be carried in their own kennels and the pet must be at least eight weeks old. The total weight of the animal and kennel should not be more than 20 lbs. A veterinary certificate has to accompany the pet and must not be predated more than a month. Pets are charged US$100, which is added to the price of your ticket. The carry-on bag allowance has to include the weight of the pet and his kennel; if it exceeds the 20 lbs, there is an additional charge for the extra weight.
