Overview

Bahamasair is an airline that operates domestic flights in the Bahamas and also certain flights to the United States. It has a fleet of ten planes and is based at the Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau, Bahamas. The airline was formed by the government when British Airways stopped flights to it during the oil crisis of 1970, leading to other airlines also taking similar action. Its IATA code is UP and ICAO code is BHS. Callsign is BAHAMAS.

Flying Route

Bahamasair flies to over 15 destinations in the Bahamas and also operates international flights to Cuba, the Turk and Caicos Islands and the United States. Flights to the United States are only to Florida where it services Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and West Palm Beach. Bahamasair also has charter flights that have to be a minimum of 35 to 50 passengers for their Dash planes and 100 to 120 people for their other jets.

Check-In

Departure times indicated on tickets are scheduled departure times and check-in time is from 24 hours before the flight and up to 90 minutes before the flight time. The counter closes an hour before the flight time and passengers are not allowed to check-in after that. During check-in, passengers who have booked their tickets using credit cards are required to present their credit cards to prove that they are genuine travelers. Bahamasair does not have online check-in facilities.

Baggage

For international travel, two bags are allowed per passenger with a weight restriction of 27 kgs/60 lbs per bag. The first bag is allowed free whereas a charge of US$20 is made for the second bag. Bags have to be less than 62 inches in circumference. Excess bags, more than the two allowed, are charged at different rates for domestic and international flights. If bags are overweight or oversize, a flat charge is levied depending on whether your flight is domestic or international. Bahamas are a favorite destination for divers, so air tanks are permitted at a rate of US$25 per tank with the stem removed.

Traveling Infants

Bahamasair does not charge anything for infants below two years old on domestic flights. Applicable taxes have to be paid at the check-in counter. Passengers travelling with infants are allowed to board first. Bookings for infants cannot be done online. Infants have to be accommodated on the lap of the accompanying adult and are charged ten percent of the adult fare on international flights.

Minors

They do not have any service for unaccompanied minors. Children are charged fares as per their applicable rules. As their flights are mostly domestic and international flights of just about an hour, the airline does not find any need for such a service.

Pets

Pets are allowed only in cabins subject to space availability. Charges are made per flight and the passenger is responsible for the carry on box and any documentation required. Booking has to be made along with the booking for the flight ticket.

Frequent Flyer Program

Bahamasair uses the Dividend Miles program of US Airways. You can accumulate the miles by travelling on any of the airlines using Dividend Miles as their frequent flyer program. Miles are also available on hotel use, car rentals and shopping. You can use your miles to purchase tickets, but these are not available on certain blackout dates. Miles can be shared or gifted to other members or you can even use it to upgrade your tickets. Membership can be upgraded to the Preferred status which attracts many more privileges, including bonus miles. A certain number of segments need to have been flown.

In Flight Services

Standard meal boxes are provided as all flights are of very short duration. For the same reason, there are no in-flight movies or other entertainment. Wine and beverages are available with payment.
