Air Mauritius is the national airline of the island nation of Mauritius. Started modestly with a Piper-Navajo in 1967, it has grown in proportion and at present, it has several Airbus aircrafts like A340 - 300's, A319-100's, A340-300E and A330-200 in its fleet. Apart from transporting passengers, the Air Mauritius also handles about 36,000 tons of cargo annually. Based in Port Louis, the main hub is located at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, Mauritius.

Flying Route

Air Mauritius flies to most of the important cities in Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. There are flights to Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Saint Dennis, Saint Pierre and Nairobi in Africa. Regular flights operate to Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and cities like New Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai and Chennai in India. Its air-route also covers Melbourne, Perth and Sidney in Australia.


Passengers are advised to report at least two hours before the scheduled departure of the flight to facilitate a smooth check-in and avoid any inconvenience. The check-in counters open three hours before the scheduled departure of the flight and they close 45 minutes prior to the departure. Passengers, who have the economy class ticket, have the option of upgrading it to business class at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, Mauritius by paying the required amount, if seats are available.

The boarding gate closes 15 minutes prior to the departure of the flight. So, it is advisable to report to the gate at least 30 minutes before departure time. The airline takes care to ensure sufficient connecting time for passengers who have to onward flights.


Passengers who travel in the international flight of Air Mauritius are entitled to 30 kg/66 lbs of free baggage allowance in business class and 23 kg/50 lbs in economy class (20 kg/44 lbs for Mauritius-Paris-Mauritius flight.) When the passengers travel on through tickets to USA and Canada from Mauritius or vice versa, the two-piece allowance applies and the maximum weight of each of the pieces should be within 20 kg/44 lbs. Passenger can take advantage of this facility even if they opt for break journey at the transit point. Infants are allowed a baggage allowance of 10 kg/22 lbs.

Passengers are allowed to carry a single piece of luggage inside the cabin. Its weight should be within 7 kg/15 lbs and the total dimension should be less than 115 cm/45". Certain personal items and laptops are also allowed within the cabin.

Except to Paris and Rodriguez, Air Mauritius allows an excess of 10 kg/22 lbs and 7kg/15 lbs in business and economy class respectively. The rates for excess baggage while traveling to Mauritius is US$3 per kg, and the rate while traveling away from Mauritius is MUR 70 per kg.

Traveling Infants

No medical clearance is necessary for infants who travel on Air Mauritius within 7 days of their birth. In order to carry a cot onboard for the infant, the infant has to be less than a year old and should not weigh more than 11 kg/25 lbs. Two infants can accompany an adult in the flight, but one of them has to be at least one year old and should be able to occupy an approved car seat. The age for the above purpose is calculated on the day of traveling. If an infant attains the age of two during the return journey, child-fare for that leg of the journey would be charged. Similarly, the baggage allowance (23 kg/50 lbs) for that leg of journey can be used.


Unaccompanied minors between five and 12 year of age are allowed to travel on Air Mauritius flights, but the parents or guardians have to inform the airline at the time of booking. Necessary documents as specified by the airline need to signed by the parents or guardian for the above purpose.


You can carry pets like cats, dogs and birds on the Air Mauritius airline as checked baggage, but you have to make prior reservation for it. The pet is to be housed in a crate as per the IATA live animals regulations. Necessary documents like entry permits, health and vaccinations certificates, etc. are to be produced during check-in. The weight of the pet along with its food and container would be treated as excess baggage and the fees applicable needs to be paid. People with disabilities are allowed to take their service dog without any additional charges, subject to the conditions specified by the airline.

The Air Mauritius offers frequent flyer program called Kestrelflyer. Arrays of incentives are given to passengers who travel frequently in the airline, based on the distance of their air-travels.
