LAN Airlines S.A. is an airline based in Santiago, Chile. It is the principal Chilean airline and one of the largest in South America, with flights to Latin America, United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, Oceania, and Europe. It is a member of the Oneworld airline alliance. Its main hub is Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport, Santiago.

Where Do They Fly

LAN Airlines and its affiliates provide nonstop and connecting flights to Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Toronto, Frankfurt, Madrid, Sydney and a large number of cities in South America like Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Bogota and Caracas. LAN code shares with American Airlines to U.S. destinations, British Airways and Iberia to European destinations, to Asian destinations with Korean Air, and to some destinations in Australia and New Zealand with Qantas.


On routes to and from the US and Canada, the airline offers a pre-check in capability. In these cases you can block your preferred seat on-line but will have to complete final check in formalities at the airport counter. The check-in time window is between 48 and two hours before flight's departure.

Check-in at LAN.com is also not available for the following passengers, who must check-in at the airport counter: passengers with infants (under two years of age), passengers with a baby crib in the cabin or passengers who need a medical certificate to travel. In all other cases, online check-in is possible when the passenger is carrying an e-ticket.

As a free baggage allowance, you can carry two pieces of 50 lbs each. One piece of hand baggage is allowed per person with a maximum weight limitation of 35 lbs (business) or 18 lbs (economy) and with dimensions within 22x14x10" (H x W x D). In addition, one personal article like a laptop or purse is also allowed.

Excess baggage fee is applicable both for baggage exceeding free limits as well as extra baggage pieces. For excess weight, the charge will be double if the bag weighs between 50 lbs and 70 lbs. In case of additional pieces, each piece of baggage will be charged twice.


Infants are defined as minors of less than two years of age. They must be accompanied by a legally responsible adult (over 18 years) or with their parents. Only one infant is permitted with an accompanying adult. Passengers traveling with infants can be provided with a basket-like crib. This service is only offered on flights operated on Boeing 767 or Airbus 340 aircraft and must be requested a minimum of 24 hours in advance.

Only infants weighing less than to 7 kilos (15 pounds) and measuring less than 71 cm (28 inches) in height can use the crib and who are less than four months of age. These standards have been established to ensure the safety and comfort of the infant.


Children between five and 12 years are eligible for minor service. This service must be requested a minimum of 24 hours prior to the flight's departure by calling the Call Center or at an LAN Sales Office. The service is not available via website.

For LAN domestic flights within Chile, Peru and Argentina, a service fee of US$15 will be charged per flight while for international flights, a service fee of US$75 will be charged per flight. The adult responsible for the child traveling as an Unaccompanied Minor must fill out the Minor Transport Form, which will be provided at the airport check-in counter.


LAN transports domesticated animals including dogs, cats, and small, ornamental birds. These animals must fall within the legal limitations set by the country they are entering.

These animals will be kept in the aircraft's cargo area. Only helper animals will be allowed in the cabin. Other types of animals (and unaccompanied pets) will be transported via LAN's Cargo Department, LANCARGO. Also the animals to be transported must be at least eight weeks old.

The transport of pets and animals is subject to an excess baggage charge, with the exception of seeing-eye dogs, helper monkeys accompanied by their owner, and rescue dogs.

Pet transport requests must be made by contacting the Call Center or at a sales office at least 48 hours prior to the flight.
