Shanghai Airlines is the first commercial airline of China based in Shanghai. It caters to both domestic and international passengers and carries out its operation from its bases at Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. It has approximately 59 aircrafts in its fleet comprising of Boeing- 737, 757, 767, 787, CRJ, HAWKER and MD-11.

Flying Route

Shanghai Airlines covers about 140 domestic routes and 11 international/regional destinations such as Asia, America, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong and Macau.


The check-in time for the domestic flights is two hours prior to scheduled departure and for regional and international flights the time is three hours prior to the scheduled departure. The passengers must arrive within the specified time with their identification cards and tickets for check-in at the airport. The boarding pass along with coupons is issued to the passenger and the boarding pass is endorsed with the completion of check-in process. The baggage that is checked-in has a claim receipt attached with appropriate tag and series number. The check-in counters closes 30 minutes before the flight departure.


For domestic flights, the airline allows first class passengers to carry two piece of carry on baggage and business/economy class passengers to carry a single piece of baggage. The dimension of the acceptable carry-on baggage is 20x40x55 cm (8x16x22") and the total acceptable weight is 5 kg/11 lbs per bag per person. The carry-on baggage whose weight and size is more than the specified limit by the airline will be transported as check-in baggage. In case of domestic and international flights, the checked baggage allowed should not exceed the dimension of 40x60x100cm (16x24x39") and the maximum weight allowed for first class is 40 kg/88 lbs, business class is 30 kg/66 lbs and economy class is 20kg/44 lbs. Infants are not allowed any free baggage. The weight and size of the baggage varies depending upon the type of aircraft; however, it is good to check with the airlines.

For international flights to USA/Canada, the linear dimension of checked baggage should not exceed 158 cm/62". The maximum weight per baggage allowed is 32kg/70 lbs for first class and business class and 23 kg/50 lbs for economy class. For other international destinations, the dimension of checked baggage is 40x60x100cm (16x24x39") withstanding a maximum weight of 50 kg/110 lbs.

In case of excess baggage, the airline levies a charge of 1.5% of the highest non-stop, one way, adult economy fare as per the local currency.

Traveling Infants

Infants who are less than two years old and would be traveling on a lap are charged 10% of the full adult fare. The airline allows only one infant per adult. In case of additional infant, the airline charges the rate of child fare, which is 50% of the total adult fare plus taxes. The infants are allowed one fully collapsible stroller or carseat in the aircraft.


Children who fall in the age group of five to 12 years are considered minors. It is not necessary for an adult to accompany them. The airline recommends that the unaccompanied minor service should be applied for while making the reservations. The service can be obtained by completing the "Unaccompanied Minor Service Application" form in duplicate. This form requires the necessary details like the unaccompanied minor's name, age, sex, route, departure port, destination and the complete contact details of the person who will pick up the minor at the final destination.


Pets such as dog, cat, poultry and household birds are required to go through the check-in process as per the scheduled time by the airline and should have a valid health and vaccination certificate. The pets are to be carried in a carrier approved by the airline. They can be carried in cabin or as cargo based upon the approval from the airline. The airline charges the excess baggage fee for the pets along with their carriage and food.

Shanghai airline allows carrying service animals as checked baggage based upon approval. They can be transported for free along with their carriage and food.

Frequent Flyer Program

Shanghai Airlines has launched frequent flying program called Flying Crane for its passengers. The Crane members can accrue the mileage, redeem awards and upgrade the services depending upon the miles accrued and terms and conditions of the program.

Shanghai Airlines in-flight services include a comfortable and spacious seat, wide variety of food such as breakfast, lunch, dinner and refreshments. In addition to this, beverages are also offered. In case of festivals or occasions, they do surprise the passengers by giving them gifts. Other in-flight services include providing newspapers, blankets and pillows.
