Finnair is the largest airline carrier in Finland and also carries the nation's flag. The company was founded in 1923 as Aero O/Y. The airline's main hub is in the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. This airline boasts of being the world's sixth oldest airline. The majority shareholder in Finnair is the Finnish government. Finnair's IATA code AY, its ICAO code is FIN and its Callsign is Finnair.

Flying Route

Finnair is a continually expanding airline. The airline is constantly adding new destinations to its itinerary. Finnair flies to major destinations in North America and Asia and is currently seeking to expand their services within Europe.

Check-In

You can check-in for your Finnair flight online. The online check-in service is open to all passengers. You can use this service even if you did not book your flight online. The online check-in service for Finnair also includes those airlines that are in alliance with Finnair and are connecting their flights with a Finnair flight. Carry on luggage does not require to be checked in once you have checked in online. Other baggage, however, needs to be checked in at the regular check-in desks.

Baggage

Finnair's baggage policies differ with different flight classes. Business class and frequent flyer club members are allowed a single bag as carry-on baggage measuring 56x45x25 cm (22x18x10") weighing not more than 10kg/22 lbs. In addition to this, they may carry a laptop computer or a briefcase. Economy and one-class flights allow a bag measuring 56x45x25 cm (22x18x10") with a weight limit of 8kg/17 lbs. Economy flights and those within China allow carry-baggage measuring 55x40x20 cm (21x16x8") and weighing 5kg/11 lbs.

The maximum weight permitted on a Finnair flight for a single bag is 32kg/70 lbs. This figure however varies depending on the flight's destination and point of departure as well as the flight class of the passenger.

Traveling Infants

Finnair defines an infant as any child under the age of two years. Finnair is an airline that understands the need for comfort for both the infant and the accompanying adult. Finnair allows the use of car seats and infant seats on their flights. During take off and landing, however, the infant must be seated on the lap of the accompanying adult and fastened in by a separate seat belt.

At least one lavatory in each Finnair flight has a baby care table to make it easier to change the infant's diapers. There is also a baby basket that can be fastened to the aircraft's wall or placed in the legroom area of the plane. The basket can be zipped up when the infant is asleep.

Minors

Finnair defines minors as any child below the age of 18 and more than two years old. A separate seat must be reserved for a minor on any of the Finnair flights. Finnair recognizes the growing number of travelling families and therefore seeks to make the journey for the children more comfortable. If you are travelling in the business class of a Finnair flight with your children, you may order special food for your children as you make your reservations for the flight. Longer flights with audio and video devices also provide animations and music for children. There are also activity packs and the Finnair staff will be checking in on the minors regularly.

Pets

Finnair offers passengers three methods of transporting their pets. If your pet is small or trained for special assistance, then it can travel in the cabin. Pets that weigh over 40kg/88 lbs must be checked in as baggage. Each pet must occupy its own leak proof container unless they are puppies or kittens of less than six months of age (only three are allowed in the same box). The third mode of transportation that Finnair offers for your pets is shipment. This is necessary when pets do not meet the baggage policies. Only assistance dogs will be transported on a Finnair flight for free.

Frequent Flyer Program

Finnair's frequent flyer program is known as Finnair Plus. Finnair Plus is a four-tier program that Finnair passengers can sign up for online. Members collect points with every flight they take on Finnair. As they collect more points, they reach higher tiers. A higher tier allows you to gain access to more benefits. You can only earn miles on specified flights and under specific fare rates. Your miles are converted to points which are redeemable.

In Flight Services

Finnair offers a wide variety of meals depending on the class and flight you are on. Warm meals are served in the business class of European and international flights lasting more than two hours. Cold snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are served in economy class of these flights. There is a wider range of meals to select from in the economy class of intercontinental flights.

Airlines Magazine

Finnair offers passengers two in-flight magazines, Blue Wings and Lento. Both magazines are published in both English and Finnish.

Airlines Alliances

Finnair is a member of the Oneworld Alliance. This is an alliance of international airline carriers. Other members of this alliance include American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, Qantas, Hungarian Airlines and Japan Airlines.
